Does it feel impossible to afford the opportunity to go abroad? Well, one of the great things about UNC is that there is a vast array of resources (read: money) for students. Options as varied as the Carolina Global Initiative Award for summer travel or a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) from the Office of Undergraduate Research are available and offer funding amounts of up to $6,000. Some opportunities even include coverage for lost wages that you would have gained from working a summer job.

Ask Yourself

Have I researched other funding opportunities on campus and off? What are their deadlines?

Have I researched the cost of living expenses (housing, food, transportation, etc.) in the country I’m visiting?

Do I have an estimate for how much my global opportunity will cost?
