The Truman Scholarship is given to 50-65 third year students (“juniors”) each year and includes a summer internship, post-undergraduate paid fellowship opportunities, and up to $30,000 for graduate studies. Applicants must have a strong academic and service record and plan to pursue a graduate program geared toward public service. Truman Scholars are future “change agents” who have the desire, intellect, and leadership potential that in time will likely enable them to improve the way that public entities such as including government agencies and non-profit organizations serve the public.

Description

The Truman Scholars Foundation gives priority to master’s and doctorate programs in public administration, public policy analysis, public health, international relations, government, economics, social services delivery, education and human resource development, and conservation and environmental protection. Students who plan to pursue medical or law degrees must make a convincing case that they do so for purposes of public service. The primary criteria for selection include:

  • An extensive record of campus and community service.
  • A commitment to a career in government or the nonprofit and advocacy sectors.
  • Communication skills and a high probability of becoming a “change agent”.
  • Strong academic record with likely acceptance to the graduate school of the candidate’s choice.

Very few candidates are strong in all areas; in general, the record of campus and community service and the commitment to a career in public service are the most important criteria.
