Minimum length of study is one academic year; maximum length is 12 months. No grants for summer study alone. Applicants must be at or near an advanced level in the Asian language, and have completed at least the third year of academic study of the language, either through coursework at college or in combination with study-aboard language programs. Grants are for study in specific language programs in East/SE Asia. Refer to the Foundation's website at www.blakemorefoundation.org for more details. Eligible languages are Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Burmese, Indonesian, Khmer, Thai, and Vietnamese.
Blakemore Freeman Fellowships fund an academic year of advanced language study abroad of Chinese, Japanese, Korean and selected Southeast Asian languages. Superior candidates pursuing careers in fields such as STEM (science, technology, engineering, math), international business, accounting, law, medicine, journalism, architecture, teaching, social or NGO work, government service, and academia are encouraged to apply.
